Hello!
Tuesday will be the last day for the Thanksgiving food collection for the AGAPE Community Center. Third grade is responsible for donating cake mix, icing, pie crust, and filling. Please drop off any final donations in the Parker Stairwell in the the box marked "Third Grade".
Here is the news for our class this week!
Please be advised that there will be no newsletter posted next Monday due to the short week and Thanksgiving holiday.
Math - We are beginning Unit 5 this week by exploring place value through the millions and reading, writing, and ordering numbers.
Homework:
- 5.1 due Tuesday
- 5.2 due Thursday (not Wednesday)
- 5.3 due Monday, Nov. 24
This week students should review their 0s, 1s, and 2s multiplication facts. We will have a quiz next Monday on just these facts. In addition to completing the review packet as part of their 90 minutes of required math activity, the kiddos can practice with flash cards, and play multiplication math games.
Reading - We are wrapping up book clubs with our final meetings this week, and beginning our non-fiction unit. We will begin by looking at text features of non-fiction texts and deciding how to choose "just-right", non-fiction books.
For homework, students should read about 4 nights a week, for a total of 2 hours per week. They should log their "just right" reading each day in their reading logs and calculate and log the total number of pages and minutes read at the end of the week. Students are also encouraged to log any additional "free reading" they do at home, as well.
Writing - We are going to continue to work on publishing our realistic fiction pieces. We will end the week with a publishing party, to celebrate our growth and hard work!
For homework, students will review concepts we are studying in word study - proper use of the plural endings 's' and 'es'. A review page will go home in orange folders on Monday.
*Parents, please be advised that I have asked children who did not complete last week's writing assignment in their writer's notebook to transfer their writing into their notebook, and turn it in by Friday.*
Have a wonderful (short) week!
