December is here! Where is the time going!? I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break.
Parents, if you have not yet sent in your child's pledge money from the read-a-thon, please do so by tomorrow Tuesday, Dec. 2, as we will need to submit the donations for for Families First no later than this date. Thank you!
Here is the news for our class this week.
Math - We will begin the week exploring very large numbers, polygons, estimation and base ten blocks, and continue on by working with decimals and place value.
Homework
- 5.5 due Tuesday
- 5.6 due Wednesday
- 5.7 due Thursday
- 5.8 due Friday
- 5.9 due Monday, Dec. 8
This week students should review their times 5 multiplication facts. We will have a quiz next Monday on just these facts. In addition to completing the review packet as part of their 90 minutes of required math activity, the kiddos can practice with flash cards, and play multiplication math games.
Reading - We are jumping into our non-fiction unit, looking this week at how to choose non-fiction books that are "just right" that we can read with stamina. We will also work on identifying the main idea of a passage and sharing what we learn with our reading partners.
For homework, students should read about 4 nights a week, for a total of 2 hours per week. They should log their "just right" reading each day in their reading logs and calculate and log the total number of pages and minutes read at the end of the week. Students are also encouraged to log any additional "free reading" they do at home, as well.
Writing - We are also beginning our study of non-fiction writing. We will begin the study this week by generating ideas for our non-fiction pieces, trying topics on for size, and teaching others about something we know a lot about in our writing.
For homework, students will write a non-fiction, creative essay or poem about what they do to "shake off" the things that people say or do that could get them down in life. We will submit their responses into Scholastic's "This is How I Shake it Off! Writing Contest". First place winners of the contest will have a chance to meet Taylor Swift, and there are prizes for runners-up and second place winners as well! Look for more information on this in your child's orange folder on Monday.
Social Studies - We are beginning our study of Native Americans. Our social studies unit will be closely integrated with reading workshop over the next couple of months, as we read critically to learn more about the different Native American tribes' cultures, customs, and traditions.
Have a wonderful week!
