Hello! Parents, please note that although this Wednesday is a G Day, there will be no chapel, and students do not have to wear their chapel uniforms. Students should however, wear their chapel uniforms on Friday, as we will have our Lessons and Carols service on this day.
Here is the news for our class this week.
Math - We are wrapping up Unit 5 this week, exploring place value in decimals. We will take our end of unit assessment next Monday, Dec. 15.
Homework
- 5.9 due Monday, Dec. 8
- 5.10 due Tuesday, Dec. 9
- 5.11 due Thursday, Dec. 11
- 5.12 due Friday, Dec. 12
This week students should review their times 10 multiplication facts. We will have a quiz next Monday on just these facts. In addition to completing the review packet as part of their 90 minutes of required math activity, the kiddos can practice with flash cards, and play multiplication math games.
Reading - In continuing our study of non-fiction, we are working on synthesizing with text features. We will also read this week with a focus on main idea. We will work on predicting the main idea of a text using headings and subheadings, and determining the main idea of sections of texts , and the texts as a whole.
For homework, students should read about 4 nights a week, for a total of 2 hours per week. The children have begun to bring home "just-right" non-fiction books that they can log as part of their 120 minutes of weekly reading. They should log their "just right" reading each day in their reading logs and calculate and log the total number of pages and minutes read at the end of the week. Students are also encouraged to log any additional "free reading" they do at home, as well.
Writing - We have chosen our topics for our non-fiction pieces and this week we will determine various perspectives on our topics to help us focus our writing. Later in the week, once we have chosen a perspective, we will organize our topics into subtopics and create chapters.
For homework, students should complete the grammar review page that will go home in their orange folders on Monday.
We are looking forward to a wonderful week!
