Hello!
Please note that we will have a late start this Wednesday, Feb. 11, and on Friday, Feb. 13 we will have a red, pink, and white Valentine NUD.
Our Valentine's Day party is this Friday, from 12:30 - 1:30pm. Parents, if you are volunteering, please be aware that traffic will be heavy around campus. Please plan accordingly for parking. Children should make their box/bag to collect their valentines in at home, and bring them to school on Thursday. They may bring valentines for all of their classmates, to pass out on Friday.
Parents, your child's non-fiction writing will go home this week. Please have your child read their book to you, and sign and return the attached letter and rubric by next Tuesday, February 17.
Here is the news for our class this week.
Math - We will wrap up Unit 7 this week, working on estimating costs, extended facts and products of 10, and exploring ratios and geometric figures. We will have a math games day on Friday.
Homework
- 7.6 due Monday, Feb. 9
- 7.7 due Wednesday
- 7.8 due Thursday
- 7.9 due Friday
Students should continue to review the multiplication facts that they need further practice with. Next week, we will have an assessment on the times 2 multiplication facts. In addition to completing the review packet as part of their 90 minutes of required math activity, the kiddos can practice with flash cards, fact triangles, and play multiplication math games. Don't forget to log your 90 minutes of math activity in your log!
Reading - We will begin the week by choosing a mystery series to read and discuss throughout our current unit. Students will meet with their book clubs to set goals for their reading. We will review what it means to be a fluent reader, and strategies for summarizing what we read. We will also revisit what makes a level 3 jot for our book club meetings. For homework, students should read about 4 nights a week, for a total of 2 hours per week. The children should log their "just right" reading each day in their reading logs and calculate and log the total number of pages and minutes read at the end of the week. Students are also encouraged to log any additional "free reading" they do at home, as well.
Writing - We are continuing our persuasive reviews unit this week by generating lists of things we like and dislike that will serve as potential topics for our writing. From these lists, we will generate strong opinion statements supported by reasons and examples. We will also take a look at how persuasive reviews are organized like an OREO (Opinion, Reason, Example, Opinion)! For homework, free write! Please write at least one full page in your writer's notebook, about anything you'd like. Maybe you'll write a non-fiction piece, or maybe you'll write a short personal narrative about what you do over the long weekend. The choice is yours! Whatever you choose to write, please make sure that you use capitalization and punctuation where needed.
We are looking forward to a great week, and four day weekend! : )
