Happy New Year! Welcome back! I hope everyone had a restful and wonderful holiday break. Here is the news for our class this week!
Parents, if you have not already done so, please have your child read you his or her published realistic fiction piece, and have him or her return it to school as soon as possible, along with the attached letter and rubric.
The Unit 5 math assessments will go home this week. Please go over the assessment with your child and have him or her return it to school by Monday, Jan. 12.
Please note that the Lower School will have a cold weather NUD on Wednesday - our late start day.
Math - We are jumping into Unit 6 this week, with our study of geometry. This week we will investigate line segments, rays, and lines, as well as angles and turns.
Homework
- 6.1 due Wednesday
- 6.2 due Friday
- 6.3 due Monday, Jan. 12
This week students should review their times 3 multiplication facts. We will have a quiz next Monday on just these facts. In addition to completing the review packet as part of their 90 minutes of required math activity, the kiddos can practice with flash cards, and play multiplication math games.
Reading - We are continuing our non-fiction unit of study. We will continue to spend time this week practicing identifying the main idea of a text and sections of a text within different non-fiction books and articles. For homework, students should read about 4 nights a week, for a total of 2 hours per week. The children will continue to bring home "just-right" non-fiction books that they can log as part of their 120 minutes of weekly reading. They should log their "just right" reading each day in their reading logs and calculate and log the total number of pages and minutes read at the end of the week. Students are also encouraged to log any additional "free reading" they do at home, as well.
Writing - As we continue to draft our own non-fiction writing pieces, we will look this week at coordinating conjunctions and compound sentences. Within our non-fiction unit of study, we will begin to revise our writing by elaborating - incorporating within our pieces: examples, lists, specific vocabulary as it relates to our topics, comparisons, and anecdotes. For homework, students should write a one-page (minimum) personal narrative piece in their writing notebooks, zooming in to a small moment from their holiday break. They should be sure to "write long" about the small moment by including details (show not tell) and inner thought.
Social Studies - We are continuing to practice researching and note-taking through our study of Native American tribes in the different regions of the U.S. This week, we will focus our research on the crafts, tools, clothing, and shelter of the different tribes we are studying.
Have a wonderful week!
