Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful break! Here is the news for our class this week.
Math - We are finishing Unit 8 this week, learning about fractions greater than one, and solving number stories including fractions. We will have our review on Thursday, and assessment on Friday.
Homework
- 8.7 due Wednesday
- 8.8 due Thursday
Students should continue to review the multiplication facts that they need further practice with. Next week, we will have an assessment on the times 7 multiplication facts. In addition to completing the review packet as part of their 90 minutes of required math activity, the kiddos can practice with flash cards, fact triangles, and play multiplication math games. Don't forget to log your 90 minutes of math activity in your log!
Reading - We are wrapping up our mystery book club unit, thinking about how we expect the last stories we're reading in our series to go, what clues we may have missed when we get to the end of our books, and what lessons we can learn from the detectives, and suspects' motives.
For homework, students should read about 4 nights a week, for a total of 2 hours per week. The children should log their "just right" reading each day in their reading logs and calculate and log the total number of pages and minutes read at the end of the week. The children may log any reading they do in their mystery books in preparation for their final book club meetings. Students are also encouraged to log any additional "free reading" they do at home, as well.
Writing - We are also wrapping up our persuasive review unit this week. We will work hard on revising our chosen pieces to include transition words, and an introduction and conclusion. We will begin publishing later on in the week.
For homework - We are beginning our Biographies unit soon, and to kick it off, we are asking the children to interview a grandparent, relative, or family friend, at least two generations older, about someone they think made a significant impact in history. A copy of the survey went home before Spring Break. The survey and written portion are due on Monday, March 23.
Social Studies - We are continuing our study of the U.S. government, learning this week about the Bill of Rights, and the three branches of government.
We are looking forward to a great week!
