Hello! Here is the news for our class this week.
Math - We will begin Unit 9, Multiplication and Division, on Tuesday. We will practice multiplying and dividing multiples of 10; 100; and 1,000. We will also learn strategies for mental math multiplication, explore arrays, areas, and fractions.
Homework
- 9.1 due Thursday
- 9.2 due Friday
- 9.3 due Monday, March 30
Students should continue to review the multiplication facts that they need further practice with. Next week, we will have an assessment on the times 7 multiplication facts*. In addition to completing the review packet as part of their 90 minutes of required math activity, the kiddos can practice with flash cards, fact triangles, and play multiplication math games. Don't forget to log your 90 minutes of math activity in your log!
*We neglected to send home a x7 practice packet last week, so we will have our x7 timed test on Monday.
Unit 8 math assessments will go home this week. Please sign and return them to school with your child, no later than next Thursday, April 2.
Reading - This week kicks off our Biographies unit of study! We will begin by comparing and contrasting expository and narrative biography texts, and applying our fiction reading skills to narrative non-fiction. We will also begin thinking about the wants and obstacles faced by the people we are reading about, and by the end of the week, choose a person who has made a significant impact on our world to study in depth for our upcoming Living Museum. (There will be more information to come on this later.)
For homework, students should read about 4 nights a week, for a total of 2 hours per week. The children should log their "just right" reading each day in their reading logs and calculate and log the total number of pages and minutes read at the end of the week. The children may log any reading they do in their biography books, and are also encouraged to log any additional "free reading" they do at home, as well.
Writing - As we continue to practice persuasive writing, we will begin our next writing unit, "Writing to Make a Real World Difference". This week, we will gather opinions and ideas in our writing notebooks by noticing noteworthy things and ideas that make the world we live in a better place. We will also think about problems in the world around us and we will imagine solutions.
For homework, students should complete the grammar practice page (front and back) that will go home in orange folders on Monday.
We will have our next word wall quiz this Friday, March 27.
Have a wonderful week!
