Hello!
Here is the news for our class this week.
Math - We are beginning Unit 8, with a focus on fractions. This week, we will look at naming parts of a whole, exploring and comparing fractions, and equivalent fractions.
Homework
- 8.1 due Tuesday
- 8.2 due Wednesday
- 8.3 due Thursday
- 8.4 due Monday, March 2
Students should continue to review the multiplication facts that they need further practice with. Next week, we will have an assessment on the times 6 multiplication facts. In addition to completing the review packet as part of their 90 minutes of required math activity, the kiddos can practice with flash cards, fact triangles, and play multiplication math games. Don't forget to log your 90 minutes of math activity in your log!
Reading - We will study how mystery readers become skilled detectives by envisioning, inferring, and predicting alongside the detectives in our books. We will also practice reading closely, stopping and thinking to understand the clues our mysteries present us, while attempting to solve the mystery before the detectives in our books.
For homework, students should read about 4 nights a week, for a total of 2 hours per week. The children should log their "just right" reading each day in their reading logs and calculate and log the total number of pages and minutes read at the end of the week. The children may log any reading they do in their mystery books in preparation for their book club meetings. Students are also encouraged to log any additional "free reading" they do at home, as well.
Parents, as we continue to grow as readers, we are all working on reading more fluently. The children are encouraged to read aloud to someone at home to practice reading in large, meaningful phrases.
Writing - This week, we will begin to work on elaborating on our reasons and examples in our persuasive reviews. We will use specific details and precise words, and look at patterns in different kinds of persuasive reviews that we might incorporate into our own. Writing homework is based in reading workshop this week. As we read further along in our mystery books, I would like for you to write long about a hunch you have about the mystery being solved in your book. Who do you suspect committed the crime? Why? What clues in the book support your theory? Why? Please write (at least) one full page in your reading notebook.
Please keep practicing your word wall words at home! We will have another word wall quiz next Thursday, just before Spring Break.
We are looking forward to a great week!
