Hello! Here is the news for our class this week.
Scholastic book orders will go home today. If you would like to order books, please do so by this Friday, Oct. 10.
Parents, please note that there will be no newsletter next week, due to Fall Break and our very short week!
Math - Our Unit 2 assessment will go home today. Please sign and return the assessment after going over it with your child by this Friday. This week in math we will begin Unit 3 by measuring the length of objects using rulers and other units of measurement.
Homework
- 3.1 due Tuesday
- 3.2 due Wednesday
- 3.3 due Friday (Lesson 3.3 will take two days. Students should not complete the home link until Thursday.)
- 3.4 due Thursday, Oct. 16
Reading - We are wrapping up our character unit of study this week, looking at how secondary characters affect our main characters, and how we can learn life lessons alongside the characters in the books we read. For homework, students should read about 4 nights a week, for a total of 2 hours per week. They should log their "just right" reading each day in their reading logs, and calculate and log the total number of pages and minutes read at the end of the week. Students are also encouraged to log any additional "free reading" they do at home, as well.
Writing - Our kiddos needed a little more time to publish their stories, so our publishing party will be on Monday. Later on this week, we will launch our realistic fiction unit by collecting story ideas and writing short, quick "story blurbs" in our writing notebooks. For homework this week, students will be given a realistic fiction mentor text to read through the eyes of a writer. Students should read through the book and write on sticky notes "moves" they notice the authors use in their stories, that we might try in our own pieces. Since there is such a long weekend ahead of us, I am making the assignment a little less demanding so that students can complete the assignment and turn it in this Friday.
Social Studies - We are finishing up our research on the regions of the United States. Students will begin collecting artifacts to include on their regions maps that they will be presenting in class. Please check you child's orange folder this week for more information on this upcoming project.
We have begun to study the 50 states and their places on a map, in class. By the end of the month, students will be expected to know the names and locations of all of the 50 states. In addition to the activities we will be doing in class, it is very important that students also study at home. If they have access to an iPad, iPod, or iPhone, they can download (with parent permission) and play "Stack the States". They can also access the link below to practice the states song we've been learning in class and play other games.
