Hello! Here is the news for our class this week!
A new set of Scholastic orders will go home today. The deadline to submit orders (online or paper order form) will be next Monday, Sept. 22. Please be sure to check your child's orange folder this evening. Students will be bringing home a lot of important information.
Math - Our first unit test will go home today. On your child's open response, you will see his or her first attempt at the problem and corresponding grade. You will also see where your child reworked the problem in colored pencil, and/or added on to their explanation, after we reengaged with the problem in small groups. In their groups, students revised their work and their thinking to build upon their understanding and problem solving skills. Please go over the assessment with your child, and sign and return it by next Monday, Sept. 22.
We will begin unit 2 by exploring fact families, extensions of addition and subtraction facts, and solving number stories.
Homework:
- 2.1 due Tuesday
- 2.2 due Wednesday
- 2.3 due Thursday
- 2.4 due Friday
- 2.5 due Monday, Sept. 22
Don't forget to log your 90 minutes of math activity this week. Please remember that in addition to playing the Everyday Math games online, students can (and should) practice their math facts (addition, subtraction, and multiplication). This can be done with flash cards, skill sheets, or games.
Reading - We are making predictions about the characters in our books, based on the author's clues and what we already know about our characters. We are also building theories about the characters we are reading about, based on their actions, behaviors, and what's happening in the story around them. For homework, students should read about 4 nights a week, for a total of 2 hours per week. They should log their reading each day in their reading logs, and calculate and log the total number of pages and minutes read at the end of the week.
Writing - This week we are drafting and revising our personal narratives by developing the hearts of our stories, and working to include inner thought, meaningful dialogue, and small action to show emotion. Our homework this week is based in reading workshop. Students will receive a character map that they should complete with information about a main character from a book they are currently reading or have read recently. You can download an extra copy of the character map and a list of character traits by clicking on the button below.
