Parents, it was great to see you all at Parent Night, and our Hopes and Dreams conferences. I hope everyone enjoyed their Labor Day weekend. Someone left a beautiful, white scarf in our classroom on Friday. Please let us know if it is yours and we will send it home with your child.
Just a reminder that if your child would like to sign up for SSC (Student Service Council), forms are available outside of Mrs. Schmid's office. All completed forms should be returned to her by September 5.
Here is the news for our class this (short) week.
Math - In math this week, we are problem solving with dollars and cents.
Homework:
- 1.9 due Wednesday, Sept. 3
- 1.10 due Thursday
- 1.11 due Monday, Sept. 8 (Please note that this lesson will take more than one day, and
students should not begin working on the home link until Friday.)
Reading - We will continue to practice tracking our thinking on post-it notes and in our reading notebooks. We will also work on summarizing what we read, with our partners, and begin jotting our ideas about the characters in our books and supporting our thinking with text evidence. For homework, students should read about 4 nights a week, for a total of 2 hours per week. They should log their reading each day in their reading logs, and calculate and log the total number of pages and minutes read at the end of the week.
Writing - We will finish collecting ideas for our personal narratives and begin to notice text features of personal narratives within mentor texts. For homework, students should choose a different moment they have collected (about a special person, special place in their lives, the first time they tried something new, or a time they learned a lesson) and write 1 full page in their writer's notebook as a beginning draft on that idea. Students will bring home another writer's notebook homework checklist. They should include all items on the checklist in their writing assignments, and turn it in along with their writing homework on Monday. If you need an extra copy of the checklist, click here.
Have a wonderful week!
