Hello! Here is the news for our class this week!
Thank you for your scholastic orders! All orders will be submitted this Wednesday, Sept. 10.
Parents, please ask your child, once a week or so, if he or she had to fill out a homework slip. If so, ask them to explain why they had to fill one out, as we want the children to be accountable and take responsibility for what they need to do. We will let you know if there is an ongoing problem with your little one missing assignments.
Math - We are finishing up unit one this week, exploring number patterns and elapsed time. We will have our Unit 1 math assessment on Thursday. Please continue to play the math games on the Everyday Math website to reinforce concepts we are learning in class. Please note that in addition to playing the Everyday Math games online, students can (and should) practice their math facts (addition, subtraction, and multiplication). This can be done with flash cards, skill sheets, or games.
Homework:
- 1.11 due Monday
- 1.12 due Tuesday
- 1.13 due Wednesday
A study guide for Unit 1 will go home on Tuesday. It is not mandatory that students complete this, but they may complete it as a part of their required 90 minutes of math activity this week.
Reading - In preparation of our character study, we will take a closer look at the characters within our "just right" books and practice the different strategies readers use to envision, while determining how a character's surroundings affect his or her behavior. For homework, students should read about 4 nights a week, for a total of 2 hours per week. They should log their reading each day in their reading logs, and calculate and log the total number of pages and minutes read at the end of the week. Parents, please help your child add up the minutes read, pages read and minutes working on math and please remind them to write the totals on the log each week. We keep records for each child, and it will save us 30 minutes if every child adds his or her own totals.
Writing - We will continue to notice text features of personal narratives, and students will choose a piece from their writer's notebook that they will begin to develop by narrowing the focus, and pulling out and stretching the "heart" of their stories. For homework, students should complete the personal narrative graphic organizer that will go home in their orange folders. Students will be prepared to begin this assignment on Tuesday.
Social Studies - Our geography unit begins this week. We will begin by studying the different regions of the United States. Students will choose a region of the United States that they would like to learn more about and will begin their research throughout the week.
Have a great week!
